49ERS AND REFS
Cat Man

The whole end of Sunday's 49ers-Giants playoff game had talk radio buzzing here in Denver over officiating. Some overnight guy, too, can't let go of the Fiesta Bowl.

Naturally, the mind flashes back to Game 6, NBA Western Conference finals. Wuz the Kings robbed?

Still sez here that, no, they weren't. Sunday's game serve to underscore what professional sports should be about.

Had the Giants not allowed the 49ers to score 25 points, had they made one stop, had they prevented one two-point conversion, they win the game. Heck, had Jeremy Shockey caught that would-be

touchdown pass, the game's over. Had the Red Sox not put runners on base, the grounder Bill Buckner missed against the Mets doesn't mean a thing. Had Miami made a stop on fourth-and-14 instead of giving up a first down, there's no controversial call and no overtime in the Fiesta Bowl. Had someone on the Chargers fallen on the Immaculate Deception "fumble," the Raiders don't score.

And had the Kings made a couple of free throws in Game 7, the whole Game 6 debacle doesn't matter. Officiating doesn't and shouldn't decide the outcome. The Giants failed to stop and failed to score several times against the 49ers that would have won that game. The Red Sox left a

runner or two on base that would have beaten the Mets. And the Kings missed free throws and shots that would have beaten the Lakers. You take care of business, the refs don't matter.

Ken

I agree with what you said. But how about this, "had the Kings won the first 4 games, Games 5, 6* and 7 wouldn't have mattered." I'd like to humbly add that while the Kings missed their FTs and the NY Giant's blew a big lead, those are part of the game. Missing FT's and blowing leads are legitimate factors that ARE part of the game. Teams putting themselves into a position to lose a game happen in any sports - basketball, football, baseball, soccer, swimming, track and field, pingpong, car racing....... those are just part of the game.

Incompetent refs, however should never be part of the game. You can argue that refs' mistakes are also part of the game. Yes, I'd give you that. But in vital situation like championship games, no excuses can justify any kind of bad officiaton that directly alters the outcome. Some athelets spend their whole life working to win that championship and when they get this close but only fail to get it because of some refs' incompetence, that is flat out unforgivable. I really want to get over with last year's WCF, and all these "Kings fans always cry and whine" comments are extremely tiring. But since it was brought up once agin.. let me note that the fact that the Kings missed FTs in Game 7, a game which should not even have existed, does not justify the horrible/biased/incompetent/inconsistent/however-you-call-it officiation in Game 6*. In other words, had the refs just done their job right (which has since been proven to be too much to ask for in the NBA) in Game 6*, there should not have been even a slightest possisbility for the Kings to miss those FTs.

The excuses that have been used to deny that Game 6* officiation has indeed costed the Kings the game and the series are as lame as saying, "had the Kings been given a chance to play a Game 8 and Game 9, the Kings would have beaten the Lakers 5-4, and those missed FT's in Game 7 would not have mattered."

"Yes, say I am whining all you want, but the fact that I am whining does not mean I am wrong."

Game 6* was called the way it was called mainly becasue NBC needed a game 7 for TV rating. Period. As for the Giants being robbed, I don't disagree with Giants fans who say they were robbed. However, what the Giants were robbed of was not the W, but the CHANCE to get that W. Peace.
