FANDEMONIUM

FANDEMONIUM FOCUS
JB

A few quick takes on the scrimmage. Note, it was only 3 quarters and Hedo, Peja and BJ did not play.

Bibby:
Ran the offense very well. Had about 3 assists and no turnovers. Shot 4-9. Looks like he is very comfortable. Comment by one of the KHTK guys after the game said that he thought it looked like Bibby had been running the Kings for the last 5 years. A bit of an overstatement, but he does seem to be adjusting quickly.

Webber:
Looks like a healthy Chris. And that's best thing you can say about him.

Christie:
Man this guy goes full tilt for everything. Whatever the Kings lost in spirit from losing Barry, Christie makes up for in hustle. He was all over the floor and in the passing lanes just like it was a playoff game. Most of his shots were good ones - no wild off balance shots. He put up a lot of shots and missed more than a few, but his form looks pretty good so no worry there.

Wallace:
He started at SF for Peja and this guy is the real deal. This is no second coming of Henry Turner. He must have had about a half dozen alley oops in the first quarter alone. He is very active around the basket for offensive and defensive rebounds. Much like Christie, he can hound his man on defense and he'll give the atheltic players (Kobe?) fits. Always around the ball. Adelman will be finding time for this guy. Against teams like the Blazers, I wouldn't mind seeing Webber at center, Hedo at PF (he is 6'10) Wallace at the SG and Peja and Christie in the back court. Some Kings fans are going to comapare him against Kobe and that's not really fair. Defensively and athletically, he's on track. But he doesn't have the body control or ball handling of Kobe. The outside shot needs some work, but it isn't awful.
I'm going to call Wallace, American Airlines. Because he is really something special in the air.

Vlade:
Looks in good shape. Had a real nice spin move around Garth Joseph. No surprises with Vlade. Another positive.

Maurice Jeffers:
Petrie is a fricking savant at getting talent deep in the draft. This guy is pretty darn good. He is a real good defender and he has some pretty good hops as well. His shooting isn't bad, but I don't think he is a guy who can create his own shot. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the IR list.

Pollard:
Love the bald look. Scot looks in awesome shape. He seems to be moving real well and had some nice drives to the basket. I think his ankle injuries really slowed him down in the past, but he looks a good deal more mobile right now.

Garth Joseph:
This dude is a man! He has got some huge arms and not an ounce of softness. Not real quick, but a half decent touch around the basket. I think he hangs around to use his six fouls on Shaq. I've seen worse guys make a 10 year career in the NBA. I would keep him around.

Cleeves:
His shot didn't look as bad as advertised. Ran the purple team very well and looked steady. If he is the 3rd PG, man is this team stacked.

Brent Price:
He wouldn't make my team. Hit every shot in warmups. Missed everything in the scrimmage. Doesn't look for other teammates and shoots first - ask questions later. Pull a hammy dude, please.

Eric Chenowith:
Hmm, he is tall... I hope he has a nice flight to Europe or the CBA. I know Scot Pollard - Eric, you are no Scot Pollard.

Mario Bennet:
Has a body that remids me of a shorter Marcus Camby. I didn't see the effort around the basket that I thought I should see out of him. Had a few good moments, but he is weak around the basket on offense. I wouldn't keep him.

Jabari Smith:
Jabari looks like last year. Very good outside shooter. Still doesn't take it to the basket enough. Fairly active on the boards. Served me a beer at the concession stand. For that alone, I'll put him on the IR list.

Watson, Wilks and Braggs won't make the team.

MORE THOUGHTS

As you passed through the parking gate (free parking tonight - who'd a thunk it?) you were given a flyer outlining new policies. Basically you can't leave the arena and return. Once you leave, you leave. Also, no backpacks or coolers are allowed and purses will be searched. And while I don't know if its permenant or not, there was a chain link fence around the middle doors so only half the entrances were open where we came in.

As for the game, it reaffirmed my belief that Jeffers should

make the squad, or at least the IR. He's athletic and defensive minded and did a good job keeping Wallace in front of him. His shot was off and on but he's a legit 2 guard on a squad with only one on the roster now.

Christie was Christie and he seemed to get his hands (or at least his fingertips) on a ton of passes, as well as stripping Watson pretty badly at halfcourt. Most importantly for me, I watched DC practice his pull up jumper in warmups, which showed me he'd been working on the shot. Also a new set play which the white team (starters, Wallace, Fundy and Price) ran a few times involved Vlade catching the ball in the right block, and passing to Christie who faded off a pick at the top of the key for a catch and shoot midrange shot. DC buried the shot 3 times off this quick hitter.

CWebb didn't play a whole lot and toward the end of the game I noticed he was on the bench with an ice pack or a sling over his shoulder. Maybe somebody with better seats or who heard something on 1140 can explain what was up with that. He sat next to Hedo (wearing an elbow sling) and Peja who was in street clothes.

Fundy looked good. I might be a bit biased b/c I really like the guy but he was active and attacked the hoop (3 or 4 dunks) although his bread and butter step back baseline j didn't go for him tonight.

Wilks displayed a nice little handle and decent defense but he's just too small and too unskilled on a team this good. On the other hand I liked him better than Price who missed several assist opportunities and shot the ball much more often than he passed. I say no thanks. Eat his contract and waive the guy.

As much as I wanted to see something out of him, Bennett was unimpressive. Braggs didn't show me anything either.

Joseph ran the floor slower than Jerome James carrying the Kings era Oliver Miller on his back. But he is huge. As I expected he didn't really have any offensive moves and couldn't get off the ground for rebounds. Not very aggressive either.

But Chenowith was, at least offensively. He didn't display any of the outside touch that is his calling card and I didn't see any real post moves, but he did try to take the ball hard to the hoop a couple times and was fouled, once by his fellow Jayhawk alum Scot. However, I don't think he knows what rebounding is, which is too bad because that's the way a guy like him could make this team.

Wallace didn't look as good tonight as in Long Beach but the level of competition is higher. He did have some nice oops, and I'm sure we'll all see him on sportscenter a few times this year. I was really hoping to see him guard Peja and/or Hido tonight. I think going against Gerald and hopefully Jeffers can only help our favorite Euros' games.

Bibby was as advertised. He ran the team, hit open shots and open teammates and drove to the hoop when the openings were there.

Finally, I don't care what anybody says, Mateen Cleaves is the owner of the ugliest jumpshot in the NBA. He did make one or two jumpers but the fact that he still has that ugly shot put form tells me that he hasn't spent the summer working on his mechanics. Until he does he'll never be a decent shooter. And as slow as he is he'd better learn to shoot better or he'll see less court time than Darrick Martin.

I for one was quite dissapointed with the amount of fan interaction...

Last year there were a few rookies and chris webber out in the halls. This year you got a couple of players working one of the consession stands but you couldnt pose or get autographs. only shoot pics from afar.

Last year the players came out into the crowd at halftime and took pics and signed things. this year nothing.

Last year the starters played more than 25% of the scrimmage. It was nice to see the rookies tearing it up but it would have been nice to see chris and vlade more. bibby didnt do much point guarding on offence, christie did most of that. bibby looked good on defence.

Jabari smith and wallace and jeffers were impressive. Garth was big, real big. price had a couple good outside shots but reminded me of derrick martin, way better than nick though. Eric didnt seem to do much.

Are the kings starting to get didstanced from the fans as they get more popular? i mean if this was as the radio ad said "the best chance to interact with the team" and there really wasnt much interaction, what do we have to look forward to later?

I really wanted to get a chance to get webber to sign my "shirt of many kings signatures" (well except webber).
last year he was in the hall, but i didnt have my shirt, which i have had for the last 2 seasons and after getting up early for every kings signing is pretty impressive.

I have everyone except webber and the new people...(no jason unfortunately). one of these days i will complete it..

but not today.

The game was really boring. and they knew it, slamson was entertaining the crowd while the ball was in play it was so bad. much worse than last year. of course no jason or barry to make it interesting. no peja or hedo. no bobby.

vlade looked good for the little time he did play, powered around garth for a reverse which looked tough to do if you saw what garth looked like.

at least my seats are better...

DIFFERENT EXPECTATIONS
Doc

My wife and I took 5 kids (not all ours) to the scrimmage last night. I did not see much of the game because my six-year old daughter was more interested in finding the Royal Court Dancers than

watching basketball. So we trolled the concourse looking for members of the dance team for her to have her picture taken with. Fortunately we found a few and they were great with my daughter and enjoyed hearing how she is a bigger fan of theirs than she is of the Kings. I'm glad some of the rest of you saw the game and reported on it here. Glad to know what I missed.

The people who went to Fandemonium with the express purpose of autographs and up-close meetings seem disappointed. Myself, I would rather see them play hard, we don't have much time to practice before this very important season gets underway. I go because I like to get a look at the guys trying to make the roster, and the new players. People seem to have lost sight of the fact that this was a practice, first and foremost.
