PRE-SEASON
THOUGHTS
Kingdude
I
was driving around today thinking various things
about preseason games, and I had some observations
I wanted to share. I hope this makes sense.
I have had to restart my computer twice since
I started writing this! It's too long, but anyway,
here goes...
*
If you simply wanted to evaluate talent,
|
experiment
with lineups and plays, and warm up for the season, you
could probably get by with 4 or 5 preseason games (like
the NFL).
* Not all teams play the same number of preseason games,
but 8 seems to be the most popular number. Some play
only 7. Don't think any play less than that.

The
NBA is experimenting with a new "NBA
branded" version of a popular kids
game, but they are having trouble getting
the yellow robot's head to stay on straight.
|
*
Preseason games are an easy way to bring in
a little extra revenue for the team owners.
This is especially true if a team has a lot
of season ticket holders (e.g. the Kings)
since they must buy all the preseason games
played in the home arena whether they plan
to attend or not.
* I'm pretty sure that the two teams playing
the game split the ticket revenue (not sure
the exact split), while the parking and concession
revenue would depend on the "home" team's
agreement with the arena owner. (Since the
Kings own Arco Arena, they get all the extras
when they play there. ( Mmmmm Kingdog! Mmmmm
Beer! ) A sold-out preseason game could add
between 1% and 2% to a (non-playoff) team's
revenue, and do even more for the bottom line
since player salaries remain the same. On
the other hand, if you have few season ticket
holders, why bother playing at home.
* Obviously, since some teams only play 7
preseason games, not all teams play the same
number of home and away games. |
*
The Heat, Hawks, Bucks, and Nets are four
of the teams playing only 7 preseason games
this year. All four of these teams have attendance
problems - Atlanta and Miami especially. One
of Miami's three home games was against Orlando,
so maybe some Magic fans showed up to watch.
The Nets final preseason home game is against
the Knicks. There will be more Knicks fans
than Nets fans for that one!
* Even teams that play 8 games may not play
the same number of home and away games. For
example, the Kings technically have 5 home
games this preseason (even though only three
were played here at ARCO). On the other hand,
the Clippers and Suns play only 3 of 8 at
"home". (Perhaps Phoenix was expecting to
have competition from the Diamondbacks?) The
Warriors play only 1 of their 8 preseason
games at home! |
