Carl's Jr. to recall Bobbleheads with toxic paint additive

The Associated Press
Last Updated 11:30 a.m. PST Tuesday, April 1, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Carl Karcher Enterprises, Inc. (CARL'S JR.) , of California is voluntarily recalling about 70,000 Bobblehead dolls of players from the National Basketball Association Sacramento Kings team.
.
Some 70 Carl's Jr. restaurants within 75 miles of Sacramento's Arco Arena sold the 10-inch dolls for $3.99 with the purchase of a combo meal. The promotion started March 25, 2002 with 30,000 figures available each week.

The paint used on about half of the dolls produced contains the chemical additive tributyltin (TBT), a commercial antifoulant often used in marine hull coatings and as a paint additive used for mildew control in external applications.

.
Not all of the dolls were decorated with the toxic paint. Dolls were manufactured for Carl Karcher Enterprises in both China and Malaysia. Only those dolls from China pose a risk to consumers. Owners of the dolls can check the labeling on the underside of the doll base to see the point of manufacture. If the words, "Made in China" appear on the underside along with a Fotoball Sports Logo, the doll owner should bring the doll to the nearest Carl's Jr restaurant for a full refund.

Dolls manufactured for the current Bobblehead promotion are not included in this recall.
